What Is a Dental Crown?

A crown, also known as a "cap," is a very durable, tooth-shaped restoration that covers the visible area of a tooth to the gum line. It serves to reshape the tooth, restore the tooth to its original size and shape, and shield it from future damage. A crown is placed to hide the decaying tooth and the rest of the teeth.

Crowns do restore, but also very often, particularly to strengthen follow-up procedures such as bridges or implants. At Bradley L. Dyer DDS PC, we provide all crowns to be comfortable, natural, and work effectively, whether you need a single crown or multiple.

When Is a Dental Crown Needed?

Crowns are usually necessary:

  • To repair a tooth that's too damaged for a filling
  • To protect a tooth that's fractured, weak, or worn down
  • After root canal therapy, to strengthen the treated tooth
  • To support a dental bridge
  • To re-establish the apex of a dental implant
  • To re-establish the normal shape and function of a discolored, deformed tooth
  • To support a tooth with an oversized filling and minimal remaining structure

Types of Crowns We Provide

We provide a variety of dental crowns from our Sevierville practice, each customized based on the dental structure, bite needs, and cosmetic needs of the patient. We have the following in inventory:

  • Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns are used as they can fairly nicely mimic the color of natural teeth. They are usually placed on front teeth or any facial part of the mouth because they provide superior color matching and light reflection.

  • Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns

PFM crowns combine the strength of a metal base with a porcelain overlay, offering both durability and esthetics. They are ideal for restoring molars or bicuspids where additional strength is needed.

  • Full Gold or Metal Crowns

Metal or gold alloy crowns have the highest wear and durability resistance. They are ideal for posterior molars and bruxing patients.

Our Process: What to Expect

A Bradley L. Dyer DDS PC dental crown will generally require two individual visits. However, it does vary with the patient. This is how we work to take you through:

  1. Evaluation and Diagnosis

During your first consultation, Dr. Dyer will examine the tooth and the infected gum. If a crown is the ideal option, we will take digital X-rays to determine if the root is fine or if there's decay present.

  1. Tooth preparation

The tooth is slowly recontoured to provide room for the crown. Decay or damaged areas are removed, and the tooth is shaped to allow for proper fitting of the crown. Local anesthesia is used to prevent pain.

  1. Impressions and Temporary Crown

We make proper digital or physical impressions of the treated tooth and the adjacent teeth to know the correct fit. A temporary crown is placed, and it ensures the tooth gets covered until your permanent crown is fabricated by a skilled dental laboratory.

  1. Placement of Permanent Crown

Once your temporary crown has been made—typically two weeks later—you come back for the permanent cementing. Dr. Dyer removes your temporary crown, inspects the new one to ensure it's well-fitted and bites properly, and then cements it in place permanently. Final shaping as necessary to provide natural function and comfort.

Dental Crowns and Implant Restorations

Dental implants give a firm base upon which crowns are secured for missing teeth. After the implant post is bonded to the jawbone, Dr. Dyer caps it with a snug crown, restoring the chewing function.

This crown is a little different from a standard crown in that it is cemented or screw-retained onto an implant abutment, instead of a natural tooth. These implant crowns are constructed with the durability to be able to withstand extreme biting pressure, as well as with the possibility of being a fixed, long-term restoration.
